We honour these unsung heroes and thank them for all they have allowed us to collectively achieve. Each charity has been invited to put forward a Community Hero, who has been instrumental to their organisation. The World AIDS Day RED RUN is built on the ethos of community mobilisation. As one collective whole we have achieved so much and these successes have only been possible because of the passion, hard work and dedication of those who have been steadily working in the background with their contributions often going unsung. We took to the streets, we set up information networks and we established charities and community groups. We mobilised rapidly and identified injustices. It was as a community that we fought back and the D.I.Y. The notion of community resonates profoundly when telling the story of HIV. Now is most certainly not the time for us to stand down! Funding cuts to the HIV sector are still all too common despite the fact that HIV support services change lives. HIV stigma is still a reality and there are still too many people undiagnosed and diagnosed late. 106,000 people are currently living with HIV in the UK (50,000 in London). However, amongst the good news the challenge remains that not everyone, and not all communities are benefiting. London and the UK have exceeded the UNAIDS 90:90:90 target and Undetectable=Untransmittable is scientific statement of fact. We have seen a dramatic fall in new HIV diagnosis.

The 2022 RED RUN takes place against the backdrop of a momentous time in the world of HIV. Past special guests have included Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, Sir Ian McKellen, Dame Barbara Windsor and has hosted spoken word performances by HIV Voices and DJs from Horse Meat Disco and Eagle London. What began 13 years ago with just 50 people is now one of the UK’s largest annual HIV community events that has raised over £875,000 for HIV support and prevention projects. Since 2009, East London’s HIV charity Positive East has organised the World AIDS Day RED RUN.
